Healthcare fraud charges that were pending against a Poplar Bluff, Mo., family practitioner are now being dropped following the accused physician's death earlier this month, according to a Daily American Republic news report.
Devendra K. Varma, MD, allegedly falsely reported in his patients' medical records the amount of time he spent examining and evaluating more than 160 Medicare and Medicaid patients between Jan. 2007 and Jan. 2009. He was also accused of submitting false claims to Medicare and Medicaid for services that were never rendered, according to the report.
Dr. Varma was in hospice care at the time of his death and died from pulmonary fibrosis. He was 78 years old, according to the report.
