Wisconsin physician sentenced to prison for selling prescriptions

A Fond du Lac, Wis.-based psychiatrist was sentenced to 48 months in prison and three years of supervised release for illegally distributing controlled substances and lying to federal agents.

John Whelan, MD, made more than $250,000 in a scheme in which he distributed controlled substance prescriptions in exchange for cash, according to a March 5 news release from the Justice Department.

He sold patients controlled substances regardless of medical need, the release said.
