Federal Jury to Deliberate Over Arkansas OB/GYN Accused of Implanting Unapproved Birth Control Devices, Filing Fraudulent Medicaid Claims

A federal jury is set to deliberate over accusations that a former Pine Bluff, Ark., physician implanted unapproved birth control devices into his female patients, according to a KSPR news report.

Kelly Dean Shrum, MD, was charged with introducing misbranded drugs into interstate commerce, as well as healthcare fraud and money laundering. He allegedly implanted a birth control device that was not approved in the U.S. and then billed Medicaid for a more expensive device that is approved for use in the U.S., according to the report.

Dr. Shrum said he "acted in good faith" and was told by other physicians that the device was just like the approved device, according to the report.
