GI Dynamics, an obesity and diabetes device maker, continued its global expansion with the launch of its EndoBarrier gastrointestinal sleeve in the Netherlands, according to a MassDevice report.
The device is a plastic sleeve that slows the uptake of nutrients from food to induce weight loss and control diabetes when inserted endoscopically into the small intestine. The device received German and Austrian approval last year, and two "Centers of Excellence" to implant the device were created in each country. The device gained the CE Mark approval in the European Union in Dec. 2009 and is also available in Chile and the U.K.
