Bariatric Surgery Reduces Cardiac Risks

A new study shows bariatric surgery is associated with a reduced number of cardiovascular deaths and events in obese patients, according to findings published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Researchers analyzed data from 2010 obese participants who underwent bariatric surgery, and 2037 matched obese patients who received usual care at 25 public surgical departments and 480 primary health care centers in Sweden. They found patients who underwent bariatric surgery experienced 28 cardiovascular deaths, while patients given normal care experienced 49. The number of total first time cardiovascular events, such as myocardial infarction or stroke, was lower in the surgery group, with 199 events compared to 234 events in the control group.
