The National Committee for Quality Assurance published new rankings of health insurance plans today, giving individuals a way to compare plans and seek out quality, according to a Consumer Reports report.
The rankings cover 830 private, Medicare and Medicaid health insurance plans that enroll approximately 127 million people. According to the report, the country's five largest insurers — Aetna, Cigna, Humana, Kaiser Permanente and United Healthcare, in addition to state-based Blue Cross Blue Shield plans — comprise 75 percent of all ranked private plans but only 36 percent of the top 50.
The rankings found that no United Healthcare plans ranked among the top 100. The Consumer Reports analysis suggests that "biggest isn't best," given that Capital Health Plan, a Blue Cross Blue Shield HMO in Florida, has just 113,300 beneficiaries but ranks third in the nation.
In addition, 18 of the top 50 ranked private plans are in the New England region. Kaiser Permanente plans in California, Colorado, Oregon and Washington were near the top of the list as well.
