Federal Officials To Investigate EHRs for Fraud Potential

Federal officials announced their investigative priorities for the coming year, and possible Medicare overbilling by physicians and hospitals using electronic medical records, according to The Center for Public Integrity.

Daniel Levinson, inspector general for the Department of Health and Human ServicesInspector General for the Department of Health and Human Services Daniel Levinson acknowledged EMRs can increase efficiently and quality of care, but he also said "we must guard against the use of electronic records to cover up crime."

The agency plans to review EHRs for potential abuse vulnerabilities. No further details were included.
