CA Law Tightens Oversight of Surgery Centers

California Gov. Jerry Brown has approved a new law that tightens scrutiny of surgery centers and their ability to meet safety requirements, according to a Los Angeles Times report.

The bill requires private accreditors to inspect ambulatory surgery centers once every three years while still allowing for surprise inspections. It prohibits outpatient centers which lose accreditation because of safety violations to reapply for accreditation with a different accrediting organization.

It also requires the state medical board to document on its website when a surgery center loses its accreditation, has it suspended or if the ASC is placed on probation.
