Joint Commission Identifies Most Challenging Requirements for First Half of 2011

The Joint Commission has identified the top five Joint Commission requirements that were most frequently identified as "not compliant" for the first half of 2011 for accredited organizations and certified programs, including ambulatory care and hospitals, according to the Sept. 28 edition of Joint Commission Online (pdf).

The requirement with the highest noncompliance rate for ambulatory care was HR.02.01.03 (The organization grants initial, renewed, or revised clinical privileges to individuals who are permitted by law and the organization to practice independently). The requirement with the second highest noncompliance rate was MM.03.01.01 (The organization safely stores medications). These are the same two requirements identified as the top most challenging requirements in 2010.

The requirement with the highest noncompliance rate for hospitals was RC.01.01.01 (The hospital maintains complete and accurate medical records for each individual patient). The requirement with the second highest noncompliance rate was LS.02.01.20 (The hospital maintains the integrity of the means of egress). As with ambulatory care, these two requirements were the most challenging in 2010.

The Joint Commission also identified the top five most challenging requirements for behavioral health care, critical access hospitals, disease-specific care, healthcare staffing services, home care, laboratory and point-of-care testing, long-term care, Medicare/Medicaid certification-based long term care and office-based surgery.
