Teva Settles Lawsuits Over Hepatitis C Outbreak in Las Vegas

Court-ordered talks have spurred settlements in 41 lawsuits involving drug companies accused of supply an anesthetic that encouraged unsafe injection practices in Las Vegas medical clinics, according to a Las Vegas Sun report.

Teva Parenteral Medicines and other companies were accused of distributing anesthetics in overly large vials, thereby encouraging healthcare providers to reuse single-use vials and causing several patients to become infected with hepatitis C.

Denise Bradley, a spokeswoman for Teva, said the company had allocated approximately $285 million to pay the bill. According to the report, the company still has 15 cases pending.

Court spokeswoman Mary Ann Price said the settlement was one of the largest in Nevada history and said it could save millions of dollars in court time and juror effort.
