New York Surgeon Charged With Bilking $3.5M From Healthcare Insurance Companies

A colorectal surgeon from Brooklyn, N.Y., has been arrested and charged for his alleged involvement in a Medicare fraud scheme that bilked the program and other healthcare benefit programs of at least $3.5 million, according to a Department of Justice news release.

Boris Sachakov, MD, has been accused of billing Medicare between Feb. 2009 and Jan. 2010 for services and surgeries that were never rendered. Several healthcare benefit programs began investigating Dr. Sachakov after being notified by his patients that they had received claims submitted by him for services never provided, according to the report.

The Department of Health & Human Services also investigated his billing patterns and found he had allegedly billed for multiple hemorrhoidectomies, office visits and examinations on the same day for the same patient on multiple occasions. Dr. Sachakov allegedly filed the claims as if he were treating distinct, unrelated conditions when in reality he was providing follow-up services related to the initial procedure.
