Two physicians have been indicted in the deaths of four Colorado patients from overdoses of pain medications, according to a release by the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Sam Jahani, DO, now of Cleveland, Texas, operated urgent-care centers in three Colorado cities and Eric Peper, MD, now of Summerland Key, Fla., worked at two of them. The two physicians allegedly prescribed controlled substances, such as oxycodone, alprazolam, diazepam and fentanyl, to known drug addicts without demonstrating medical necessity.
The physicians also allegedly falsified medical records, overbilling Medicare, Medicaid and private insurers. If convicted, they could receive long prison sentences and pay millions of dollars in fines.
