The U.S. Attorney's Office in Philadelphia has issued indictments against 53 people, including a family physician, for participating in the distribution of more than 200,000 oxycodone pills, according to a report by the Philadelphia Daily News.
Norman M. Werther, MD, a 71-year-old family physician in Willow Grove, Pa., was indicted for allegedly accepting 31 "pseudo patients" and giving them "cursory" physical exams.
For a of $150 office visit fee, Dr. Werther allegedly wrote prescriptions for oxycodone-based drugs, and the patients were driven to pharmacies to have their prescriptions filled.
