New research presented at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine’s annual meeting July 5 to 8 detailed the top reasons patients chose to undergo rotator cuff surgery.
The researchers surveyed 149 patients before they received arthroscopic rotator cuff repair to detail the patients’ reasons for choosing surgery.
Here are three main takeaways from the research:
1. Reasons for surgery cited in the study include alleviating chronic pain, concern for the condition worsening from tear enlargement and an inability to sleep due to discomfort.
2. Researchers found through arthroscopic rotator cuff surgery, patients saw significant functional improvements and relief from pain.
3. Follow-up evaluations showed the patients' objectives were achieved by surgery.
