The auditorium at UHS Binghamton (N.Y.) General Hospital has been dedicated to ophthalmologist Francis Gilroy, MD, according to a news release.
Dr. Gilroy is former chairman of the board of UHS and was the first president of the combined medical staffs when UHS was formed through the combination of Binghamton General, Wilson and Ideal hospitals.
The auditorium is used for physician meetings, educational presentations for hospital staff and community gatherings.
"Over many years, this room has served as a center of education and enlightenment, so it is fitting that we should name it in honor of someone whose life and work have exemplified learning, understanding and progress in the field of medicine," said Matthew Salanger, president and CEO of UHS, in the release. "Thousands of community residents have entrusted to him their vision, and it has been with great vision that he has been a trusted leader of UHS through its most formative years."
Dr. Gilroy received degrees from St. Bonaventure University, Georgetown University and the University of Pennsylvania. He served as chief of ophthalmology at the Kimbrough Army Hospital in Fort Meade, Md., prior to launching his private ophthalmology practice in Binghamton.
