Colorectal Cancer Advocates Gather at Capitol Hill to Promote National Screening Program

Several colorectal cancer experts and advocates gathered at Capitol Hill on March 30 to promote the establishment of a national colorectal cancer screening program, according to an Olympus America news release.

The groups involved included the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Olympus and the Prevent Cancer Foundation. The sponsors of a briefing at the event advocated for the passage of legislation, the Colorectal Cancer Prevention, Early Detection, and Treatment Act, which would establish a national program under the Center for Disease Control and Prevention for colorectal cancer screenings and treatment.

The proposed legislation would target the pre-Medicare population who are at high risk for colorectal cancer as well as give uninsured and underinsured patients coverage for screening, diagnostic follow up and treatment.
