Trial Shows First Evidence Anal Cancer is Preventable

Anal cancer rates in the United States are rising, but researchers found the quadrivalent HPV vaccine reduced the rate of anal intraepithelial neoplasia in men who have sex with men, according to findings published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Researchers gave the qHPV or a placebo vaccine to 602 healthy men who have sex with men, ages 16-26. They found the rate of anal intraepithelial neoplasia per 100 person-years was 17.5 in the placebo group and 13.0 in the vaccine group.
