A new study found same-day bowel cleansing regimen is effective and results in fewer side effects for afternoon colonoscopy than a split-dose regimen over two days, according to findings published in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology.
Researchers analyzed results from 227 patients who underwent a colonoscopy. The 95 patients in Group A were given three doses of sodium picosulphate at 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. the day before and 8 a.m. on the morning of the procedure. The patients in Group B were given two doses of sodium picosulphate at 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. on the morning of the procedure.
The same-day preparation produced better mucosal cleansing, fewer side effects and less effect on patients' daily life activities. When surveyed about which method they preferred, significantly more patients preferred the same-day preparation.
