Study: Anesthesiologists Improve Adenoma Detection Rate

A new study found significantly more adenomas were detected in colonoscopies when an anesthesiologist was present, according to a report by Internal Medical News.

The study, presented at Digestive Disease Week, found a detection rate of 37.7 percent for procedures with an anesthesiologist, compared with 37 percent for procedures without one. That difference was considered statistically significant due to the study's very large numbers, bolstered by data from the of the new American Gastroenterological Association Digestive Health Outcomes Registry.

Using an anesthesiologist raises the average cost of a colonoscopy to $700 per case, but it has become more common, especially for comorbid patients with a higher risk of moderate sedation complications.
