Patients Gain Weight to Qualify for Weight Loss Surgery

Due to insurance policies that limit weight loss surgery coverage to those with BMIs between 35 and 40, hopeful patients are gaining weight in order to qualify for the surgery, an MSNBC report said.

Earlier this year, the FDA approved Lap-Band surgery for patients with BMIs as low as 30 if they have at least one weight-related disease. However, insurance companies have not lowered their thresholds for covering those procedures.
