Commentary: Use Caution With Weight Loss Surgery and Teens

Although bariatric surgery is becoming more popular for adults, and it seems appealing for obese adolescents, long-term consequences are not yet known, said Julie R. Ingelfinger, MD, in an article in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Little is known about the effects of bariatric surgery on teens, but there are several studies in the works. Until those findings are released, which could be a few years, physicians should approach weigh loss surgery in teens with extreme caution, Dr. Ingelfinger said.
