Internist loses medical license for failing to maintain safe practices for hormone dispensing: 5 key details

The State Board of Medical Examiners in New Jersey revoked the medical licenses of five physicians, including an internist, Caldwells Patch reported.

Here are six key details to know:

1. Bonnie Chen, an internist who practiced at West Caldwell, N.J.-based Optimum Health strategies, had her medical license revoked for not complying with statutes and regulations for prescribing and dispensing hormone replacement medications, including anabolic steroids and estrogen. Ms. Chen had her license revoked permanently on Aug. 12.

2. Ms. Chen was formally reprimanded in 2013 for failing to maintain consistent safe practices for prescribing injectable testosterone, human chorionic gonadotropin and other medications.

3. Jose Leyson, one of the other physicians to lose their license, pleaded guilty in January to writing illegal prescriptions for Oxycodone and conspiring to commit healthcare fraud.

4. Kevin T. Custis, a fmaily physician, pleaded guilty in April to distributing anabolic steroids and possessing marijuana with the intent to distribute. Mr. Custis agreed to have his license permanently revoked July 31 and faces up to 10 years in federal prison and a $500,000 fine for distributing anabolic steroids.

5. William F. Mclay allegedly prescribed Oxycodone, Xanax, Adderall, and other CDS to his patients without a medical purpose. He surrendered his medical license July 16.

6. Anthony Enrico, Jr., a podiatrist, allegedly prescribed painkillers to patients without a legitimate medical purpose, along with other drugs unrelated to podiatry. Last October, he pleaded guilty to defrauding $3 million from Medicare and private insurance through fraudulent billings. His medical license was revoked June 27.
