The number of gastric banding procedures has increased 22 times since the early 1990s and is expected to help drive the gastrointestinal device market to $14.6 billion, according to Kalorama Information's The World Market for Gastrointestinal Devices report.
In 1993, only 16,800 procedures were reported. That number jumped to 370,000 in 2009. Once offered only to patients who needed to lose more than 100 pounds, concerns about obesity-related conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease, have opened the procedure up to patients with a BMI as low as 30. An increase in cancer diagnoses and procedures is also expected to contribute to market growth.
