Patients from certain ethnic groups with colorectal cancer may be unable to access follow-up care, according to a study published in Cancer.
Cure reported on the study Dec. 28. Researchers reviewed data from a Medicare registry from 2009-14. The registry followed 6,602 men who received CRC surgery.
Following surgery, about 57.5 percent of all patients went for a colonoscopy within 18 months of their procedure. About 47.3 percent of Black, 52.4 percent of Hispanic and 58.9 percent of non-Hispanic white people received a follow-up colonoscopy. Black patients were 29.6 percent less likely to receive a follow-up colonoscopy. Non-Hispanic white patients who had Medicare and Medicaid were 35 percent less-likely to go through a follow-up colonoscopy.
