Fight Colorectal Cancer awarded a research grant to Christine Sardo Molmenti, PhD, and Heather Hampel to advance research on early-onset colorectal cancer.
Here's what you should know:
1. Dr. Molmenti and Ms. Hampel are attempting to quantify the rate of advanced adenomas among first-degree relatives of early-onset CRC patients.
2. Dr. Molmenti has conducted CRC-focused research since 2003. She is a member of the Colorectal Cancer Alliance's Medical Scientific Advisory Committee and co-chair of the peer review grants program.
"Our work has the potential to yield important clinical implications by raising awareness among gastroenterologists and primary care physicians to improve communication of colonoscopy findings and colorectal cancer risk to family members in order to promote and ensure adequate uptake of screening guidelines," Dr. Molmenti said.
3. Heather Hampel has been a cancer genetic counselor since 1995. About her work, she said, "Research on early-age onset colorectal cancer is critically important so that we can identify the risk factors and work toward prevention."
