American College of Radiology urges CMS to cover virtual colonoscopy — 4 key notes

The American College of Radiology released a statement urging CMS to cover virtual colonography procedures for seniors.

Here's what you should know:

1. A study, published in Radiology, claims when payers cover virtual colonoscopy, colorectal cancer screenings rates improve by around 50 percent.

2. Virtual colonoscopies are covered by private insurers with no copay, but are not covered by Medicare.

3. Several organization recommend virtual colonoscopies, and multiple studies have confirmed the procedures' effectiveness.

4. ACR Cancer Committee Chair Judy Yee, MD, said in release, "Medicare coverage of virtual colonoscopy would boost screening and save lives. It would help many seniors avoid extensive treatment and reduce costs. Virtual colonoscopy can both prevent cancer and detect cancer. Medicare should cover these exams."
