Florida has seen a steady improvement in its nursing shortage over the past several years, according to Florida Hospital HR Director Karla Muniz in an interview with the Orlando Business Journal.
"The simple fact [is] that our economy as a nation has shifted," said Ms. Muniz. "Many of the nurses who were working part-time are getting back into the workforce full-time. I make that statement with caution, though, because the shortage is still there. It's just not as bad as it was five to six years ago."
The Florida Center for Nursing estimates that the state's nursing shortage will grow from 5,917 in 2010 to 11,177 in 2015, but Ms. Muniz said that the hospital continues to have a significant need for new hires, regardless of experience level.
"There's always a place for the inexperienced graduate that will grow with us," she said. "But, we want the graduates from the programs that prepare them for the reality of the jobs."
