Excellus BlueCross BlueShield hack may impact 10M: 5 things to know

Excellus BlueCross BlueShield discovered a data breach in its systems, dating back to 2013.

Here are five things to know:

1. The breach affected more than 10 million people, most in upstate New York.

2. Subscribers of affiliates, Lifetime Benefit Solutions, Lifetime Care, Lifetime Health Medical Group, The MedAmerica Companies and Univera Healthcare may also have been affected.

3. Although Excellus realized the hack in August, the hacking began about two years ago.

4. The company stated subscribers' names, birthdays, Social Security number, financial account information and claims information may have all been compromised.

5. Keller Rohrback, a complex litigation group in New York representing clients affected by data breaches, is looking into the hacking.

"Given the highly confidential and personal nature of medical information, healthcare consumers have a right to expect that their information will be kept safe from criminals who can use this data to commit identity theft and fraud," said Cari Laufenberg, a member of Keller Rohrback's litigation group.
