Memorial Board Chair Responds to Criticism Over Plans to Lease Surgery Center

Memorial Health System board chair Jim Moore recently responded to criticism from Councilman Tim Leigh over business and real estate decisions made by the city-owned hospital, according to a Colorado Springs Gazette report.

Mr. Moore debunked Mr. Leigh's claim that the hospital plans to employ all of its physicians, saying that the hospital has "emphasized repeatedly that we do not believe in a one-size-fits-all physician model." He said to underscore this point, the hospital is creating a medical services offerings through which private practice physicians can purchase business services from the hospital.

He also addressed the hospital's search for a tenant for the surgery center located in the North Medical Office Building. He said that in 2005, Memorial began working with a physician group to establish an ASC next to Memorial Hospital North. After Memorial entered into a master lease, the physician group underwent a change that made the proposed arrangement untenable. The hospital has explored opportunities with possible tenants with no solution so far.
