Surgical Notes, a nationwide provider of medical transcription, coding, electronic medical records and other value-added IT services for ambulatory surgery centers, has added a coding module which allows facilities to code their operative reports in the company's SN Chart transcription management web portal, according to Jeff Blankinship, CEO of Surgical Notes.
"It allows you to view the schedule, view the operative reports and code online all on the same screen," says Mr. Blankinship. "Essentially the outcome is it improves the productivity and accuracy of a coder because everything is all on one screen live. It also allows you to generate Excel spreadsheets and do charge entry at the same time if desired, thus eliminating human transposition errors and ensuring data integrity, along with reconciliation and reporting features."
He says coders can use the module, launched Jan. 1, to automatically run reports on all of the patients seen at the ASC for the week, month or year and identify if anything is missing in their documentation.
Another significant feature of the coding module is an automatic electronic notification sent to the ASC and, if used, a coding company whenever physicians make changes to their operative reports.
"The facility (and coding company) will automatically be notified electronically that an edit has been made to the operative report so the coders can go back and re-code or re-bill for those changes," Mr. Blankinship. This feature allows an ASC to better ensure it is capturing money properly owed to it, avoid overbilling and keep medical records accurate and succinct.
To date, 40 plus ASCs are using the application and Mr. Blankinship anticipates the number to increase significantly in the coming months.
