Beth Israel Deaconess Physicians Use Price List to Compare Procedure Costs

Price lists for physicians could limit unnecessary orders and decrease the cost of healthcare, say leaders at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, which distributes to its providers a one-page list of 56 common medical tests and their prices, according to a WBUR report.

The list is private for Beth Israel physicians, according to the report. Physicians, hospitals and most insurance companies do not share prices about medical tests agreed to in a contract.

Some physicians say considering costs as they care for patients is unethical, but physicians at Beth Israel are working to re-frame cost conversations within the physician-patient relationship. Advocates of the list say such measures are necessary to decrease the cost of healthcare nationwide while maintaining quality. More physicians are willing to participate as studies continue to show that medical bills are the leading cause of bankruptcy, according to the report.
