Applied Medical Sues Covidien Over Universal Seal Trocar

Applied Medical has filed a lawsuit against Tyco Healthcare, doing business as Covidien, charging that Covidien's VersaPort Plus and VersaSeal Plus trocar products infringe Applied Medical's recently issued trocar seal patent, according to a release by Applied Medical.

Applied Medical reported it had obtained two prior judgments that Covidien's predecessors, Tyco Healthcare and U.S. Surgical, had willfully infringed other Applied Medical patents on the universal seal technology by selling earlier versions of the VersaPort Plus and VersaSeal Plus products.

Due to those judgments, the earlier versions were removed from the market, Applied Medical said.
