AMA Adopts New Policy for Drug Shortages

The American Medical Association adopted a policy this week that supports drug shortage legislation requiring manufacturers to notify the FDA of any discontinuance, interruption or adjustment in the production of a drug that may result in a shortage, according to an association news release.

The policy also calls on the AMA to advocate that the FDA and Congress require drug manufacturers to create plans to ensure the continued supply of vital and life-sustaining medications and vaccines. The policy also supports the recommendations of the 2010 Drug Shortage Summit organized by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists, American Society of Anesthesiologists, American Society of Clinical Oncologists and the Institute for Safe Medication Practices.
