Laxmaiah Manchikanti, MD, is the chairman of the board and CEO of the American Society for Interventional Pain Physicians and Society for Interventional Pain Management Surgery Centers. He is also the medical director of the Pain Management Centers of Paducah (Ky.), where he practices interventional pain management.
Throughout his career, Dr. Manchikanti has served with several professional organizations, and is currently a member of the Kentucky Carrier Advisory Committee. Previously he was a member of the Murray State University Board of Regents, Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure and Medicare Coverage Advisory Committee. In addition to his clinical, Dr. Manchikanti has spent countless hours advocating in Washington, DC, on behalf of providers and patients. He supported the passage of NASPER and has testified before Congress as an expert witness on controlled substance management and interventional pain management.
Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Manchikanti has authored more than 300 publications and serves on several editorial boards. He recognizes the importance of producing evidence-based research in pain management for the future success in the field.
"Physicians can get involved with high level evidence studies by designing their own studies or associating with others who do these," says Dr. Manchikanti. "They can also associate with industries and obtain funding for the organizations which can sponsor these studies without becoming involved in critical aspects of the study. Pain physicians must maintain independence and avoid bias."
Dr. Manchikanti earned his medical degree at Gandhi Medical College at Osmania University in India and completed his residency in anesthesiology at Gandhi Hospital. His additional training includes a fellowship in anesthesiology and critical care medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology and has subspecialty certification in pain management. He is a fellow in Interventional Pain Practice.
