The Alabama Health Insurance Exchange Study Commission is wrapping up its proposals, which are expected to recommend the creation of an exchange for the state, according to a Montgomery Advisor report.
While the document is still under wraps, Rep. Jim McClendon (R-Springville) and Sen. Greg Reed (R-Jasper), the co-chairs of the commission, told the Montgomery Advisor that Gov. Bentley believes the health insurance exchange would be beneficial to Alabama citizens. The recommendations will be used to form legislation introduced in next year's legislative session, which begins in February.
Under the federal healthcare reform law, states are mandated to set up health insurance exchanges by 2014 or invite the federal government to step in and take over the process. Health insurances are intended to serve as online health insurance "marketplaces," where individuals and small businesses can comparison shop for coverage.
