A Tennessee anesthesiologist was one of five physicians to receive the University of Texas Medical Branch Ashbel Smith Distinguished Alumnus Award for service to the medical profession and humanity. The award is the highest honor bestowed by the university's School of Medicine Alumni Association, according to a Galveston Daily News report.
Mark Newton, MD, who graduated from the medical school in 1987, is an associate clinical professor of anesthesiology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tenn., and a pediatric anesthesiologist at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at the university.
Dr. Newton is a founder and the director of the Vanderbilt International Anesthesia program, a global service, education and research program focusing on anesthesia and ICU issues in low income countries.
