9 Anesthesiologist Appointments and Accomplishments

Here are nine anesthesiologists' recent professional appointments and accomplishments.

Professional Appointments

Joseph Lucero, MD, has joined the staff of Bothwell Regional Health Center in Sedalia, Mo. He previously served as an anesthesiologist and acting chief medical officer in Iraq for the U.S. Department of State.

The American Board of Anesthesiology has appointed Jill Mhyre, MD, of the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor, to the position of senior editor for the Joint Council on Anesthesiology Examinations. Dr. Mhyre, an assistant professor in the department of anesthesiology who specializes in obstetric anesthesiology, will begin her four-year term as senior editor this week. In her new role, Dr. Mhyre will write 12 articles and review 18 articles each year.

The University of Pittsburgh has named Debra K. Weiner, MD, director of a new pain center established under the National Institutes of Health Pain Consortium. The center will act as a hub for the development, evaluation and distribution of pain management curriculum resources to enhance pain education for healthcare professionals. Dr. Weiner presently serves as a professor of medicine, psychiatry and anesthesiology.

McLeod Health Systems in Dillon, S.C., this week appointed R. Benjamin King, MD, to its health community board. Dr. King is one of five new members who will serve three-year terms with the board. Board certified in anesthesiology, he cares for patients at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

Perry Memorial Hospital in Princeton, Ill., has appointed Deofil Orteza, MD, medical director of anesthesia and respiratory care. He will also provide anesthesia services in his new position.

Accomplishments

Two physicians from the department of anesthesiology and perioperative care at the University of California at Irvine have received Foundation of Anesthesia, Education and Research grants. Davinder Ramsingh, MD, will apply the grant towards his project: "Application of a Comprehensive Perioperative Ultrasound Curriculum for Anesthesiologists: Bringing the Perioperative Physician out of the Guessing Game." Darren Raphael, MD, will use the grant to further his research: "Simulation Based Interviews for Selection of Anesthesiology Residency Candidates."

William O'Byrne, MD, an anesthesiologist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital, was one of six physicians in the country to receive the Lathem Physician Leadership Award in Hand Hygiene from Proventix Systems of Birmingham. Dr. O'Byrne is recognized for providing guidance in hand hygiene and ensuring staff member reminders on the importance of hand washing to reduce and prevent infections.

The American Society of Anesthesiology has awarded Ralph Lydic, MD, of the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor, the 2012 ASA Excellence in Research Award for his research related to anesthesiology, sleep and breathing. Dr. Lydic currently serves as a professor of anesthesiology and the co-director of the University of Michigan's Center for Sleep Science.
