Hospira Resumes Production of Anesthesia Drugs in North Carolina

Drug manufacturer Hospira has resumed production of anesthesia and injectable drugs at its Rocky Mount, N.C., plant, according to a Reuters report.

The company's shares increased more than 7 percent on Tuesday after the company indicated that long-standing shortage and quality issues are being resolved. Hospira has experienced numerous problems at its Rocky Mount facility, which represents about 25 percent of corporate profits. The company is in discussions with the FDA about how to fix quality problems at the plant, which have sparked a class-action lawsuit from investors who said the company failed to disclose the issues.

Management will meet with FDA officials in the next few weeks, and CEO Michael Ball "seemed upbeat" about the company's future, according to the report.

CFO Thomas Werner said Rocky Mount is producing many anesthesia drugs currently in short supply. While the company declined to indicate exactly which drugs are being produced, a company spokesman said the list includes local and general anesthesia and analgesia agents and injectable drug products.
