The Connecticut state Board of Education approved a new master's program at Quinnipiac University in Hamden to train anesthesiology assistants, even though they are not qualified to practice in the state, according to the Connecticut Post.
The vote passed by an 8-2 margin and several registered nurse anesthetist groups strongly opposed the decision, saying the state does not need more unskilled providers when more trained professionals are plentiful, according to the report.
Anesthesiology assistants receive less training than CRNAs and are only allowed to practice in 17 states and the District of Columbia.
Those in the training program will be required to do clinical training outside of the state.
