The American Society of Anesthesiologists has joined 250 other groups in a formal communication to members of Congress opposing the Independent Payment Advisory Board, according to an ASA release.
The letter from the groups states, "We are deeply concerned about the impact the IPAB will have on patient access to quality healthcare. The bulk of any recommended spending reductions will almost certainly come in the form of payment cuts to Medicare providers."
IPAB was created by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and includes 15 members appointed by the president. These members are in charge of developing proposals to maintain Medicare spending below a targeted per capita growth rate, and the board's proposals receive special expedited and protected consideration by Congress.
According to the report, the ASA is "extremely troubled" by the prospect of sweeping cuts to Medicare payments for anesthesia services.
