ASA Leaders Meet With GAO Investigators to Discuss Drug Shortages

On Friday, June 24, staff from the Government Accountability Office interviewed several leaders from the American Society of Anesthesiologists as part of the office's study on drug shortages, according to an ASA release.

GAO staff interviewed ASA President Mark Warner, MD, ASA Vice President of Scientific Affairs Arnold J. Berry, MD, MPH, and other ASA staff. The GAO agreed to open an investigation following a request by Sens. Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Casey (D-Pa.) and Harkin (D-Iowa) that the office investigate drug shortages.

According to the report, the interview gave the ASA an opportunity to outline the impact of the drug shortages. The ASA was also able to outline some of the potential causes of the shortages and recommend actions to alleviate the problem.
