9 Anesthesiologist Appointments and Accomplishments

Here are nine recent anesthesiologist appointments and accomplishments.

Appointments

St. Margaret's Valley Pain Clinic in Spring Valley, Ill., announced that Anesthesia Associates, led by Gregory Arnold, MD, will perform anesthesia and pain management services for the center. Dr. Arnold and his staff will provide a multidisciplinary approach that includes aquatic therapy, epidural injections, kyphoplasty, neural therapy injections, occupational therapy, physical therapy, radiofrequency neurolysis and selectively placed nerve and joint injections.

The American Medical Association announced that Joseph P. Annis, MD, will serve a sixth consecutive term on its board of trustees. Dr. Annis practiced for 26 years as a partner with Austin Anesthesiology Group in Texas and currently serves as an adjunct associate professor of anesthesiology at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, N.H.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham has named H. Ronald Vinik, MD, professor emeritus in the department of anesthesiology. Dr. Vinik joined the UAB faculty in 1976 and served as chief of anesthesia services at the Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital in Birmingham from 1989 to 2005.

The National Quality Forum appointed Lee A. Fleisher, MD, to its Consensus Standards Approval Committee. Currently a professor of anesthesiology and critical care at the University of Pennsylvania Health System in Philadelphia, he will serve a two-year term with NQF beginning in July.

The Association of University Anesthesiologists has appointed Rita M. Patel, MD, to a three-year term on its educational advisory board. Her membership will begin at the AUA's 60th Annual Meeting in April 2013 in Miami, Fla. Dr. Patel is currently a professor of anesthesiology and the vice chair for education at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Ramapo Anesthesia in Suffern, N.Y., announced the addition of James D. Levinsohn, MD, and Sinha Monsur, MD, to its staff. Both physicians will provide anesthesia services at Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis.

Accomplishments

The Illinois Society of Anesthesiologists this month presented a distinguished services award to John E. Szewczyk, MD, of Rockford Anesthesiologists Associated. Given annually since 1970, the award recognizes physicians and scientists who have made outstanding contributions to the Illinois Society of Anesthesiologists and the field of anesthesiology in Illinois.

Mark Newton, MD, was one of five physicians to receive the University of Texas Medical Branch Ashbel Smith Distinguished Alumnus Award for service to the medical profession and humanity. Dr. Newton is a founder and the director of the Vanderbilt International Anesthesia program, a global service, education and research program focusing on anesthesia and ICU issues in low income countries.
