West Virginia OB/GYN Sentenced to 1 Year of Prison for Healthcare Fraud

Danine Rydland, MD, an obstetrician/gynecologists from Martinsburg, W.Va., has been sentenced to one year and one day in prison after she was convicted on 34 counts of healthcare fraud in February, according to a report from The Journal.

Dr. Rydland was found guilty of defrauding Medicare, Medicaid, the Public Employees Insurance Agency and Unicare between June 2004 and Dec. 2008. The false claims were billed for services that were never provided or for more complex services.

Dr. Rydland was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $38,013.79 to Medicare; $11,378.58 to the Unicare healthcare benefit program; $7,036.29 to the West Virginia PEIA; and $76,025.64 to the Medicaid program. Following her time in prison, Dr. Rydland was sentenced to three years of supervised release.
