Owners of Illinois Healthcare Company, Former Podiatrist Allegedly Bilked $3.3M From Medicare

The owners of a healthcare business in Palos Hills, Ill., and a suspended podiatrist were arrested yesterday and charged with illegally accepting more than $1.5 million in fraudulent Medicare payments, according to a local ABC 7 News report.

Bahir Haj Khalil and Mohammed Khamis Rashed, the owners of House Call Physicians, allegedly billed for services as if they were performed by physicians when they were performed by physician assistants. The owners also billed for podiatry services as if they were performed by a licensed podiatrist, when they were really performed by Paschal U. Oparah, DPM — a podiatrist whose license was suspended.

From 2008-May 2011, Medicare reimbursed House Call more than $3.3 million based on 36,864 claims for 2,348 beneficiaries, according to the news report. All three face up to 10 years in prison and fines of $250,000 if convicted.
