Ohio Workers' Comp Bags Largest-Ever Restitution Payment: $830K From Jailed Anesthesiologist

The Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation has received its largest-ever restitution payment: $830,000 from Jorge Martinez, MD, an anesthesiologist serving a life sentence for 56 criminal counts, according to a Columbus Business First report.

Dr. Martinez was convicted in 2006 on 56 criminal counts for a scheme in which he submitted $60 million in fraudulent claims to state and federal government and private insurers. According to the Ohio Bureau, the conviction included a charge of healthcare fraud that resulted in death.

According to the report, Dr. Martinez was found to have billed for unnecessary or unwritten prescriptions while he saw more than 100 patients a day.

After the $830,000 payment, Dr. Martinez still owes the Bureau $5 million, according to the report.
