Missouri Physician, Clinic Accused of Unnecessary Treatments, False Diagnoses Settle Lawsuit for Undisclosed Amount

A pediatrician from Kansas City, Mo., and her employer have settled a lawsuit alleging the pediatrician misdiagnosed patients, causing them to undergo medically unnecessary treatments, according to a Missouri Lawyers Media news release.

Carol Ann Ryser, MD, who worked at Health Centers of America-Kansas City, was accused of knowingly misdiagnosing patients with conditions they did not have in order to prescribe supplements and treatments for profit, according to the report.

One patient, Candace Anthony, claimed Dr. Ryser diagnosed her with Lyme disease, when in fact she suffered from hyperthyroidism. Because of the false diagnosis, Ms. Anthony underwent unnecessary treatment and was prescribed antibiotics, alternative treatments and other medication. After discovering her misdiagnosis, Ms. Anthony said she had to undergo additional hospitalization, surgery and other treatment as a result of Dr. Ryser's care.

The details of the settlement agreement remain confidential, according to the news release.
