Michigan Neurologist Accused of Falsely Diagnosing Patients to Increase Procedure Volume

Yasser Awaad, MD, a Dearborn, Mich.-based pediatric neurologist is accused of diagnosing patients with epilepsy when in fact the patients were healthy in order to increase the volume of tests he performed at Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center in Dearborn, according to a report by the Detroit Free Press.

A recent lawsuit by seven patients against Dr. Awaad and Oakwood accuses Dr. Awaad of misdiagnosing patients because his earnings were tied to procedure volume, according to the report. Patients diagnosed with epilepsy undergo regular testing to monitor their condition.

The hospital denies tying Dr. Awaad's compensation to volume.
