A trial began yesterday for a physician from Baton Rouge, La., and three other men accused of stealing $2.5 million from Medicare, according to an Advocate report.
Sofjan M. Lamid, MD, allegedly wrote prescriptions for durable medical equipment for hundreds of people who did not need them. Unique Medical Solutions, the company operated by defendant Felix Ngari, then billed Medicare for the DME, according to the allegations. Prosecutors say each DME prescription was worth thousands of dollars.
Dr. Lamid has held affiliations with Louisiana State University and other academic institutions as an instructor for medical school classes.
