Two co-owners and operators of pharmacies in Brooklyn, N.Y., have been arrested on healthcare fraud charges for their alleged participation in a $3 million Medicare fraud scheme, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice.
Luba Balyasny and Alla Shrayber are licensed pharmacists in New York who ran Monica's Pharmacy and L&A Pharmacy. Court documents show that, from Jan. 2007-Dec. 2009, Ms. Balyasny and Ms. Shrayber allegedly defrauded Medicare Part D by systematically submitting false claims for prescriptions that were never dispensed to Medicare beneficiaries.
The complaint also claims the pharmacies' inventory did not match the pharmacies' reimbursement claims, meaning the women allegedly charged Medicare for drugs that were not purchased by their pharmacies.
If convicted, Ms. Balyasny and Ms. Shrayber face a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison.
