A pain management physician from Clearwater, Fla., has been found not guilty of six counts of Medicare fraud, according to a St. Petersburg Times report.
Authorities claimed Jayam Krishna Iyer, MD, submitted approximately $457,000 in claims for services performed by another physician who could not submit Medicare claims because of a prior felony conviction.
Dr. Iyer's attorney said his client was unaware of the other physician's background and did not perform willful or intentional fraud. The federal trial, held in Tampa, lasted a week.
Dr. Iyer's case was part of the nationwide fraud sweep in February, when law enforcement agents charged 111 people with filing fraudulent claims.
